Preparation of Ultrafine CVD WC Powders Deposited from WCl6 Gas Mixtures

چکیده
Ultrafiie WC powders were produced from WCla-C3Hs-H2 gas mixtures in a conventional tubular hot-wall downstream CVD reactor. At reaction temperatures between 1100 and 1550°C powders containing W, WZC, WC and carbon were produced. The overall chemical compositions of the tungsten coinpounds as well as the free carbon contents depended strongly on the reaction temperature and the ratio of the reaction gases introduced. With increased reaction temperature and exposure time the amount of tungsten carbides (WC, W2C) in the deposits increased. At the selected conditions pure WC could be detected by X-ray diffraction. However, excess carbon was always present, while carbon particles could not be observed by SEM in the powder mixtures. This couldbe explained by thin carbon layers on the carbide particles. The WC powder particles were very fine but only particles or agglomerates smaller than 0.5 pm can be observed by SEM. A deposition mechanism based on reduction of the chlorides and their carburization to the carbides is discussed.

The electrochemical characteristics of a mixture of Pt-black and WC powders and its catalytic activity for methanol and formic acid oxidation were investigated in acid solution. XRD and AFM measurements revealed that the WC powder employed for the investigation was a single-phase material consisting of crystallites/spherical particles of average size of about 50 nm, which were agglomerated into...

We have deposited a series of WC–Co coatings by the high velocity oxy fuel (HVOF) process, using three different powders, and different spray conditions. The powders are a nanocrystalline (Nanocarb), a near-nanostructured powder (Infralloy) containing a proprietary additive aimed at retarding grain growth, and multimodal (mixed micro and nano) powder (Nanomyte). HVOF spray conditions were stoic...

Thin films of boron nitride have been obtained by reactive pulsed laser ablation of a boron target in the presence of a 13.56 MHz radio frequency nitrogen plasma. The films have been deposited at several substrate temperatures, using the on-axis configuration, on WC–Co cutting tools, after Co removal by chemical etching (HClyHNO or HFyHNO ). Diamond polycrystalline 3 3 films of increasing thick...

High velocity oxygen fuel thermal spray has been widely used to deposit hard composite materials such as WC-Co powders for wear-resistant applications. Unlike gas atomized spherical powders, WC-CO powders form a more complex geometry. The knowledge gained from the existing spherical powders on process control and optimization may not be directly applicable to WC-Co coatings. This paper is the f...
